Tarot with the Spanish Deck follows the same logic as any other Tarot. However, in this oracle, we will use the traditional Spanish deck cards, the ones we played countless games with the family.
The Spanish deck has 48 cards. It is divided into four suits, each suit has 12 cards, numbered from 1 to 9; the 10 (Page), 11 (Knight), and 12 (King). In this deck, there is no Queen. The figures are shown full-body, unlike the French deck, and there are also 2 jokers, which are only used for playing, not for Tarot cartomancy.
For ages, the Spanish deck has been used to read the future. In fact, years ago, only the Spanish Deck was used in Spain. The cartomancy of the Tarot, although known, began to be used later.
By giving each card meaning and value, and the corresponding aspect to each suit, it is interpreted following an established logic and spreads, just like in the Tarot Oracle.
The suits deal with different aspects of our lives:
- OROS: money, investments, inheritances, properties, luck in gambling, intellect, youth, and represents people with earth signs in their horoscope: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn; and the summer season.
- COPAS: love, marriage, partnership, happiness, lover, children, family, creativity, friendship, fertility, old age, and represents people with water signs in their horoscope: Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio; and the winter season.
- BASTOS: action, movement, travel, energy, work, intelligence, professional success, projects, maturity, and represents people with fire signs in their horoscope: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius; and the spring season.
- ESPADAS: accidents, fights, misunderstandings, health, mood, sadness, childhood, and represents people with air signs in their horoscope: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius; and the autumn season.
In this article, we will discover the meaning of each card in the Spanish deck for Tarot interpretation in spreads.
Brief curiosities about the Spanish deck.
The Spanish Deck is of Arab origin. Initially, there was a Queen, which was the number 13, but due to superstitions, the Queen was removed, leaving only 12 cards per suit, making the Spanish deck unique in the world.
On the other hand, it is said that the suits symbolized the social classes of the time: Cups represented the clergy or church; Coins represented the bourgeoisie; Swords represented the army; and Clubs represented the people, although there are various theories about this. As it evolved and adapted to Spanish society, the deck arrangement remained as specified earlier.
The first Spanish card manufacturer “Pont Nou” of Beceite (Teruel), sold the rights to the cards to Heraclio Fournier, a Frenchman, who is the greatest card creator that exists. The drawings have changed style depending on the time and the region of Spain or Hispanic America, with designs also found in Italian areas with Spanish influence.
