Meaning of Temperance in Tarot

    Meaning of Temperance in Tarot

An Arcana of Balance that Expresses Transformation

Temperance is the fourteenth major arcana, emerging from the symbiosis of the Strength and Justice arcanas. This card is the best representation of the fourth cardinal virtue, clearly and precisely showing the balance between moderation and equilibrium as formulas for mending and regenerating situations. In a very general sense, it is a symbol of alchemy and spiritual transfusions.

    The Temperance Arcana

Interpretation of the Elements in the Deck

In the card of Temperance, we observe the figure of an angel with wings pouring water from one jug to another. The angel represents virtue, while the water being transferred symbolizes the serene flow of life that must be accepted without fear or opposition. The jugs are one blue (spirituality, sky, or future) and one red (passion, earth, or the past). The golden color signifies power and the divine. The action of the angel pouring water from one container to another also symbolizes balance and the power of knowledge.

The red and blue colors of the angel’s garments express the balance between earth and sky, while the ground where some plants are growing alludes to the fertility of the earth and the importance of life.

In a subtle appearance, the woman keeps one foot in the water (the unconscious) while the other is on the ground (the conscious).

Temperance in Readings: Interpretation of the Arcana of Transformations

In a reading, the arcana speaks of balance, moderation, and patience as necessary purposes for navigating life. These subtle mechanisms open possibilities for recognizing and building equilibrium and self-control. Temperance is the card of regeneration and innovation, respecting the values of moderation, self-discipline, and frugality. It represents the birth and happy transformation towards a new initiative projected into the future.

In a broad sense, it suggests scarcity from a long-term perspective, translating into a state of imbalance that requires reflection to produce changes leading to fulfillment and a more prosperous future.

The reversed position of this card is not inherently negative but rather a warning to take pauses that allow for calm and unhurried reassessment of new things.

Finally, the appearance of this card symbolizes the need to rethink the mechanisms and orientations followed in the pursuit of goals in areas as diverse as work, personal relationships, or even romantic ones. Therefore, it requires observing the accompanying cards in the reading.
